Trabocca B.V. purchases coffee from Suke Quto farm since 2009 and a close relationship has developed between the two companies. The Suke Quto farm is located in Oromia Region, one of the largest coffee producing regions in Ethiopia. Most of the people living in this area are smallholders who grow coffee, farm vegetables and raise cattle. Rapid population growth has led to low incomes for the farmers. This low salary, combined with the great distance between schools in the region, has made it impossible for many children to attend school. This inaccessibility of education has had a greatly negative impact on the development of both the community and the country.
Government initiatives to aid in the construction of schools and provide teachers have not reached the village of Kumure, where Suke Quto is located. The community constructed their own school, but funds were soon exhausted and the building is currently in very bad shape, lacking cement floors. The children are learning in extremely dusty classrooms during the dry season and very muddy ones during the rainy season.
The School Project
In March 2015 Trabocca and Tesfaye, the owner of Suke Quto farm, decided to help the primary school in order to enable the children of the coffee growers to go to a safe and healthy school. When we started this project 943 children were coming to this school, following classes in shifts with more than 60 children in a class room! The school building is in a very bad condition and would be too hard to renovate. Therefore we have planned to rebuild the school in phases.
Our goal is to realize the following within 2 years:
At the 17th of November 2015 there was an official ceremony to celebrate the start of building the school. Watch the video about the school project and openings celebration to get in impression of the project.
A big thank you to our donors!
We were able to raise an amount of Usd 35000,-. This enabled us to start with the first school block of 4 class rooms. We would like to thank the following companies for supporting us:
A team of Tradin Organic has run the seven hills run in order to raise money for the Suke Quto school project! With the support of their sponsors they have raised an amount of have raised an amount of Euro € 1,938.04
The process of finding the right contractor and permission took a lot of time. When we were finally ready to start building our contractor had to quit his job because of the political situation in Ethiopia. Fortunately last month the contractor was able to start again. The foundation has been created, pillars constructed and now the walls are almost finished. This first school block will be finished within the next two months.
